Re-keying a lock is the process of replacing the tumblers (pins, wafer tumblers) of a lock cylinder with new tumblers of different sizes. A new key will coincide with the new tumblers and the old keys will no longer work. This process is one of the most popular services any locksmith company provides. Why? Because it is a budget oriented procedure that is also practical and quick to implement for both commercial and residential applications.
On a residential level a common use of a rekey is when there is a change of occupant in a premise, and access to the location needs to be restricted to the departing tenant, and granted to the new one, In this case ASAP Lock & Safe will quickly dispatch one of our experienced locksmiths to do a rekey of your door. It is always good to keep in mind that this is a great opportunity to upgrade the level of security by asking us to install a cylinder set with restricted key duplication, like the ones provided by Medeco. This way, you will be guaranteeing a safer environment at a very affordable price.
For commercial customers the same principals apply, but when we start considering bigger facilities, the need for a professional master key system is latent. How do master key systems relate with rekeying a lock? Well, simply consider the possibility of losing the main master key? Would you risk entrance to all of the rooms in the facility by allowing the exposed locks to remain in place? Probably not; in which case all the cylinders of the facility would need to be replaced, all of the locks would need to be rekeyed. You would think “costly procedure for losing a simple master key”, and that is exactly right, in the past these kinds of events where costly for facility security managers.
But there are great news coming in the form of technological advances, and we are referring to the advent of e-cylinders. An e-cylinder has the advantage of being an access control tool which uses micro chips in both the key-blanks and cylinders to grant access to specific individuals to specific rooms. In this manner a master key has access to all rooms and if lost, it’s not the many locks that need to be rekeyed but the master key that will need to be disabled, saving thousands of dollars. This means that today, commercial property managers can transition with confidence to an e-cylinder system, like the Logic from Medeco.
To schedule a residential rekey, or to request an appointment with one of our security experts for your commercial facility, please call 954-457-2727 today.
